Comments and Reviews

"...I read each [of your books] in one day, Thursday and Friday, while lying in bed recuperating from minor surgery.  I was so VERY blessed. Your manner of incorporating scripture was so unique and the applications of the scriptures were insightful. Light Bird's Song particularly ministered to me regarding my own marriage. I am going to reread both books, slowly this time, looking up the scripture references and meditating on them as I go. The timing of my reading these books was clearly God's sovereign hand.  He is so GOOD!"  Angie, TX

"Light Bird's Song is even BETTER than A River too Deep, if that is possible.  The character development across the board is intriguing.  Pacing Wolf's growing awareness is perfectly revealed over the course of the book, with the climax of character coming in the very last scene.  His relationship with the heroine, Light Bird, has the perfect tension produced by approach/avoidance blended with profound moments of miscommunication, spike with hope of moving forward.  Many elements of temperament and personality unfold in surprising ways in supporting characters to doubly invest the reader in the non-stop action.

The pace of the narrative keeps the reader on edge and moving forward. It mirrors the way the Lord moves us forward in our own lives as we seek—often impatiently and imperfectly—to do His will. For instance, Light Bird and Pacing Wolf are separated in a dramatic and unpredictable plot twist brought about through their personal weaknesses. However, God uses those weaknesses in the end to bring about His purpose for their people.

Ms. Betts is a writer who knows how to handle a story and to make use of literary devices--not for their own sake, but to weave a colorful tapestry over the course of her novels.  She has a wonderful ability to hold back her characters' physical and emotional details and then let them go in satisfying, surprising ways.  For example, about two-thirds or more into the book, her readers finally get a clue as to how the inscrutable Pacing Wolf's emotional shell developed in his youth.  Her novels are full of hope for her characters, but not all of her characters rise to the challenge.  Some are, by their own choice, spiritually left behind.

The scriptures at the end of each chapter succinctly match, and are a perfect anchor for, the depth of the action that just took place. Altogether, Ms. Betts’ books are a great and altogether satisfying read.”  Lesley, Poriya Ilit, Israel

"Love light bird's song.  Hands down one of my favorite books, loooove it." Caitlin, FL

"When I was in California 2 years ago, my daughter-in-law gave me your first book A River too Deep to read.  I have never been much of a reader but I thoroughly enjoyed the story. In fact, I ordered a copy for my step-daughter.  I just spent 3 weeks with them again and this time she sent your new novel home with me.  I just finished it and wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your stories.  They are so interesting and once I start the book,  can't put it down until I am finished.  It is so interesting to learn about the Indians and their customs.  Keep up the wonderful work."  Betty, PA

"I couldn't wait to get back to reading after dinner each night.  I had a strong personal relationship with "Light Bird" as I could feel her pain, happiness, strength, and most of all, her faith in God.  I enjoyed all the little surprises that kept cropping up in each chapter that sparked a new interest.  I certainly got a Kodak picture of the events as they unfold in living color.  It should hit the best seller list!"  Jan, FL

"Loved your book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I learned some lesson from the book. I truly enjoyed reading it.  It ministered to me." Carol, FL.

"I am REALLY enjoying your book.  I can hardly wait each month to hear the next chapter...I am always challenged and encouraged by the way that Light Bird finds such hope and peace from the Scriptures that she has buried deep in her heart.” Debbie G., audio-reading via www.HeartbeatTheMagazine.com

"HI!  I just wanted to e-mail you and let you know how much I enjoyed your book.  It was really good.  I had a hard time putting it down."  Esther, PA

"Just as fab as the other one.  What an excellent writer!!!"  Debbie, New Zealand

"Light Bird's Song" is Ms. Betts' best work so far and continues the story started in "A River Too Deep", her first novel. We get into the characters' minds and hearts through her skillful writing. Very intriguing opening and insight into true character. Had to pay attention not to miss any of the "hints" as to what was really going on. A love story with God as the center, but written to intrigue, not preach. The writing pulled on my emotions and a few tears were shed along with lots of smiles. Really didn't expect the ending."  WillyBen, via Amazon.com

"A wonderful sequel to A River Too Deep, Light Bird's Song continues to enhance the proof that inner strength and commitment comes from the belief in the Bible and the teachings of Jesus.  The author makes you feel that you are a part of Light Bird . . . that you feel her every emotion.  Can't wait to read the next book!"  Nancy, FL

"I found myself being swept into those emotions as the plot was being developed.  I was sad, I cried, angry, hopeful, in expectation of, relieved, etc.  More than anything I saw God working in the circumstances and was grateful for the loyalty of the main characters to allow God to work through them."  Olga, FL

"Sydney, I have had A River Too Deep for a couple months but never got around to reading it. The first night I started reading I couldn’t put the book down.  I would read for two hours straight till I couldn’t hold my eyes open anymore.  I was reading till 12 and 1am.  I would read during my 15min breaks at work and my 30min lunch. The same thing happened, a week later, when I read Light Bird’s Song which I just finished today.  I actually feel disappointed that the books are done.  I had grown such an attachment to the characters like they were real."  Jennifer D. Clearwater
